Mentees 2017 – RVCC Mentor Program

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF MENTEE?

A mentee is an individual who receives advice, assistance and feedback from a more experienced person over a set period of time, resulting in the enhancement of the mentee’s educational and professional endeavors. The mentee must have clear goals and be willing to accept guidance and advice in order for the relationship to be successful. A mentee is open to constructive feedback and has a desire to learn and develop new skills to progress in their graduate education.

To attend the “Job Shadow Day” at Sanofi on January 31, 2018 at Sanofi.
To attend two webinars in June 21, 2017 at 3pm and August 8, 2017 at 3pm.
To commit two Thursdays a month during College Hour in September, October, November and December.
To commit to 4 Wednesdays per month from 1pm-2pm in January, February, March and April (These dates are the one credit career development courses).
100% commitment and attendance to the program is required to receive the $1,500 scholarship.
Must attend all meetings/trainings and be accountable.
To be punctual, timely and prepared to all required meetings.
Be open to learn from my mentor, be honest as well as respectful.
To provide feedback and complete all required evaluations.
Mentees will identify goals, seek feedback and be open to what the mentor can share.
A mentee will follow through on commitments and be prepared for each meeting with their mentor.
A mentee will be honest and sincere and allocate his or her time and energy for the mentor/mentee sessions.

Barbara Kania

Barbara Kania Bio

My name is Barbara Kania. I am a Pre-med student at RVCC. I plan to go to medical school in hopes of one day being a practicing physician. On campus, I really enjoy getting involved in clubs and other opportunities like research.

Off campus, I volunteer for my town’s rescue squad as an EMT. Other interests and hobbies I like include; traveling, exercising and reading. A unique thing about me is my passion for animals and the environment. I have actually set a goal to open at least one non-profit animal shelter separate from my career. I really value and admire people that make a positive change in the world and I believe I could make a small, but meaningful change by accomplishing this goal.

One reason I am excited to be a part of this unique opportunity is that I will get the chance to work alongside experienced professionals all year long as they mentor me to become the best version of myself that I can be.

My name is Peter and I am a student at Raritan Valley Community College. I am currently a Business Administration Major and have goals of becoming a Lawyer. In my free time, I like to enjoy time with my friends playing basketball, going to the beach, and I love traveling. Traveling for me helps me meet and interact with other cultures, which gives me a variety of experiences which I believe helps to keep the mind and body healthy.

I consider myself a fiercely devoted friend and confidant. I am always open to spontaneous spur of the moment events and activities. I don’t take myself too seriously and enjoy a good sense of humor.

I am excited about this opportunity because, since I have never have had a mentor, it is exciting to think about being mentored by someone who shares my passion and interests. In addition, the idea of working with a mentor who is full of knowledge and experience is exciting to me. I know I have much to learn and I feel this program is the beginning of a wonderful journey for me!

I was inspired to go into the field of Nursing because of both my love and caring for others as well as for past challenges I had with my own health. Eventually, I see myself teaching nursing. Teaching feels very natural to me. My hobbies include singing, reading, helping others, sewing, and learning new ideas. I am inquisitive and always desire to learn and know more.

I am excited to be a part of this unique opportunity because I look forward to having the opportunity to be able to achieve my desired goal in life through the assistance, guidance and support of a mentor. There are so many benefits this program offers and I am grateful to have been selected to be a part of it!

My name is Maham Baig. I am an International Student at Raritan Valley Community College, majoring in Accounting Information Systems. Last year, I moved to New Jersey from Pakistan, where I have lived most of my life. I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and Management from Pakistan. At RVCC, I am on the President’s List and a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. With all my academic accomplishments, I wish to excel in the field of Finance and Accounting upon graduation.

A few years ago, I spent a semester in Turkey as an Exchange Student as part of the Study Abroad Program. There I met and travelled with people from all over the world and realized how we are all the same regardless of color, ethnicity or race. Living in New Jersey, I am ecstatic about meeting new people and developing lifetime relationships. I enjoy volunteering and being part of social movements. I have in the past helped the under privileged in Pakistan’s society by raising funds to support basic education. Volunteer work helped me to connect with all kinds of people with empathy.

I have always been driven to succeed and to grasp any opportunity that comes my way by working hard and this program aims to do exactly that. By being a part of the Sanofi Corporate Mentor Program at RVCC, I wish to discover who I truly am, what I am capable of and what direction I want my life to take.

My name is Thomas Boon. I am currently a student at Raritan Valley Community College majoring in Pre-Pharmacy. I am interested in one day becoming a Pharmacist and conducting pharmaceutical research, I am particularly interested in Neuropharmacology. Furthermore, I would like to have some impact on the world of medicine through my studies.

My hobbies include meditation, mixed martial arts, swimming, calisthenics, hiking and reading a good book when I have some down time. I am deeply interested in both philosophy and science because these topics help to give me a better understanding of the world and the mind. I look forward to learning all that I possibly can through working with my mentor.

I would like to hone my skills as I am working hard to be a professional in the working world. I am also very excited to go on the shadowing tour to see how an actual pharmaceutical company runs. I can’t wait!

My name is Viridiana, Viri for short. I am a Queer, Hispania woman studying at Raritan Valley Community College as a Liberal Arts Major. I am a feminist and an advocate of social justice for all human beings. I am currently the President of the Orgullo Latino Club, a member of the Social Action Collective, and a member of the Immigrant’s Defense Network. Outside of school, I play field hockey in an adult league. My dream job is to work for the United Nations where I can assist less privileged people and countries.

I want to dedicate my future to the bettering of other’s lives. I feel I am extremely fortunate to have been chosen to be a mentee for the Sanofi Corporate Mentor Program at RVCC. I am excited to make a personal connection with my mentor. It is my hope that my mentor will give me support and confidence by teaching me professional skills that will enable me to attain my goals.

Hi, my name is Mark Romero, I am an Engineering student at RVCC. When I transfer I plan on majoring in Aerospace Engineering at a four year institute. In my spare time I enjoy learning about space, playing video games and making music. I am a competitive person and I think that is what drives me to advance through college and achieve my goals. Ultimately it is my goal to work at NASA and/or SpaceX. I believe that we are approaching an exciting time in space, and I would like to be a part of it.

What I look forward to most about this mentoring experience is the chance to work alongside my mentor in order to develop myself as a professional. I want to gain valuable experience and knowledge that will help advance me through my career. I am very excited for the program and feel honored to be a part of it.

I am 21 years old, a first-generation college student. I am currently a Social Science major, I am planning on becoming a Psychology major when I transfer into a 4 year college. I value and work hard at being grounded in my power and strength as a woman. I also am a sensitive person who appreciates honesty and open communication. I welcome constructive criticism in the name of personal growth. As hobbies, I love going out to eat with my friends. I enjoy reading and spending time alone. I love to visit amusement parks and museums. But most of all, I love to go shopping.

I am very excited to be a part of this program, because honestly, it is something historical that no one has yet done within RVCC. It is most certainly an opportunity and a privilege.

Carlos Pareja Bio

I am honored to have been selected for the Sanofi Mentorship program. I was born in Lima, Peru on August 30, 1993. In June of 1995 my parents decided to immigrate to the United States with my sister and myself in search of the American Dream. Throughout my childhood I have witnessed my parents work tirelessly to provide for my siblings and myself. This has driven me to always put in maximum effort in all my tasks.

In November of 2011, I began a five year enlistment within the Navy where my job as a Hospital Corpsman not just introduced me to medicine, but led me to have a passion for it. The past 5 years of my life have led me to the present where I now pursue a Pre-med Associate Degree. My career goal is to one day graduate medical school and become a doctor. I currently lean towards internal medicine though am open to developing an interest in any other fields of medicine. Another goal of mine is to be successful enough to be able to help other students pay for tuition through donating to scholarship funds.

I would one day like to “pay it forward.” Aside from my past and my future goals, I have always been involved with sports. Throughout high school, I played football, wrestled and ran track. I still play sports as a hobby and am heavily involved with my younger brother’s high school athletics. I attend all of my brother’s games and I encourage him to stay in shape. I am also a huge fan of music. I spend countless hours a week listening to a variety of genres. I have strong bonds with my friends and family. I try my best to make time outside of my school responsibilities to spend time with the ones I hold dear to me.
